The Master of Descriptions

Do you remember when he braced the darkness and looming insecurities, high at night, and made it to your doorstep? ’cause you weren’t feeling well. You were Lonely, scared and you couldn’t sleep. He wasn’t ready to let his baby girl feel dejected, so he came over and made sure you slept. Then left in the middle of the night, crawled from bed, after you felt alright. He just held you till you slept. kissed your forehead then left. Even though he didn’t take the pain away, even though his presence made no difference in the way you felt, he couldn’t change everything that was worse. He only gave you hope. In him he wanted you to find strength to fight on, to find some beauty in life. He made you feel special. He made you feel like you can always count on him. That he will always be there for you unconditionally. You didn’t have to ask him. He didn’t have to say it. He made you feel it.

Do you remember when you ought to leave town? You were travelling to school. It started raining 30 minutes to departure time, you couldn’t make it on time. With packed suitcase, and flight ticket in your hands you started sobbing. Your family couldn’t do anything but tell you, you can reschedule. He got on the motorbike, braced thunder and cold, and made it to your doorstep. He was dripping wet, he was asthmatic but he didn’t care. He had a chance of delaying your flight so he could spend more time with you, but he made sure you got to the airport safe and on time, even though both of you got rained on. And in that moment, when it rained on both of you, you shed some tears, not because you could’ve missed your flight, but ’cause he was right there with you telling you, “don’t worry, I’ve got you.” And the words that could escape your lips were, “Thank you, don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Even though it hurt him that you were leaving town, he smiled through the pain, held your hands, gripped it firmly and supported you. He said, “go for it girl! Go make me proud.” He never made you feel out of place. Somehow that’s how he was taught to love. To understand when it’s enough to let go and hold on. He loved you too much, he wanted to see you become the best of you without him. For the test of true love, is time. So he promised he’d wait for you, even when you knew you weren’t coming back.

Do you remember when he always invited you over to his place? Because somehow he had no money, had no job, to take you out on a proper date, or race up to where you always were? But since you set your standards high, you forgot that you loved him. So, you often said, the sun’s heat is too much, can’t walk neath it. Do you remember some of the petty excuses, perhaps lies that you told him, why you couldn’t make it? Even when he asked you to meet him halfway, and he made it to 3/4 way, you just couldn’t make it. ‘Cause you didn’t love him enough. was that it? Ever felt like a random guy to the girl you love? No, I don’t mean your crush. I mean the girl you’re in a relationship with. Your girlfriend. The one who often text you, “I love you.”?

So don’t tell me you love me. Please, show it to me. You don’t have to sing for me. Don’t write me a poem either. You don’t have to post my pictures on your walls. You don’t have to do those. Just do the simple things, those the tinniest. Those are the ones that make sense to me. Like pick up my calls when I call. Or call me back or send a sms when you can’t. Text me in the middle of the day out of nowhere. Tell me how fun your day was. Or how frustrating your day is. Text me, or call me. Tell me about that workmate who often think he has a future with you. Just talk to me. Make me feel like I’m a part of you. And when you miss me, make all the silly excuses just to see me. That’s how I know love. In its simplest form. Tell me about your neighbour. About your dog, that it refused to eat meat. Just talk to me. And whence all is done, we can grab a coffee or go for evening walks, and have a conversation and enjoy our company, just us with no phone between.

Give him love or give him fire. Let his stomach burn with desire each time he sees you. Each time he read your texts let him feel excited. Such that he’d drop everything he was doing for 5 minutes, just to talk to you. ‘Cause if you don’t. You’ll be sleeping beside him after a sweaty sex, that he didn’t enjoy, for you don’t give him the thrill anymore. He felt out of love with you long before you knew it, and you let him. He’d be awake, when you’re asleep, texting some other girl, “I love you too.”

Now how would you feel about that. Who would you blame.?

Give him love or give him fire. Don’t say you love me, love is overrated. Show me.
